I have to say I’m extremely excited about the Oscars for the first time in… well what does that matter, it’s been a long time. Eddie “ICE CREAM MAN!!” Murphy is set to host the Oscars in case you haven’t been online today.

This is phenomenal! But wait, his career is over, you are saying, right? He’s too old, out of touch and hasn’t been live on stage in forever. You kidding me? The guy is around 50, and just because he chose to go the film route instead of performing on stage isn’t a bad thing. It’s a step up in entertainment in my view.

I feel like most comedians obviously start on the stage, hopefully get famous enough to either land a job on SNL, SC-TV, Kids in the Hall, The State, The Daily Show, Conan, The Tonight Show, David Letterman, The Whitest Kids U’know or The Upright Citizens Brigade or get super lucky and head straight to films. Why would you want to go back to shlumming it up on stage in front of a crowd that may or may not be into your act?

Eddie Murphy’s standup was pure genius. Delirious and Raw are equally amazing though I find myself more attached to Delirious. His short stint on SNL sent him miles ahead of most actors at that time, especially black actors. At that time there were 3 really famous black actors, Richard Pryor, Bill Cosby and Eddie Murphy. That was it! This was huge for him, and he was in a ton of films, good or bad throughout the 80’s into the early 90’s before catapulting into family film cemeteryville. I mean the man turned down Ghostbusters for Beverly Hills Cop! Can you imagine how more amazing Ghostbusters would have been with Eddie Murphy playing Winston Zeddemore? That’s huge to think he knew that BHC would be a bigger success than Ghostbusters! Don’t get me wrong, Ernie Hudson rocked, but Eddie Murphy, wow. Like there wasn’t enough adlibbing jokes in the film, can you imagine Akroid, Ramis, Murray and Murphy??

Now sure, there is a chance he could flop miserably onstage at the Oscars, but I’d rather think he’d be amazing and kickstart his career again. Other than his voice work on Shrek with Donkey, he hasn’t done much worth watching (Bowfinger and Dream Girls) in a long, long time. For this to hopefully pull him back into the spotlight of great roles could be truly epic for not only his career but for films in general. As one of the most original comics of all time, he could add a lot to this stale and recycled state of flux that Hollywood is looped in. I also don’t know enough of his past to say he’d be a good role model, but compared to most of the main actors of today, I’d say he’s a pretty good choice in my book. I’d choose Eddie Murphy over T.I. or Lil Wayne any day.

Thumbs up for the Oscars recognizing what a terrible mistake they made last year with the double host of doom show and trying to move back into the ratings and entertainment. Let’s just hope it doesn’t turn into a soapbox for hate on politics from either side of the spectrum.

“Bend ovah, boy!”

I think Eddie’s a good choice. He’s a funny dude, I mean, can I get some Trading Places up in here? Heh. True, he went the equivalent of Cuba Gooding Jr in Snow Dogs when he did not one, but TWO Daddy Day Cares. But, his career was going nowhere after his hooker incident.

Which Eddie will we get? The raw, nasty stand up Eddie or the toned down made-for-television Eddie? Probably a mix of the two, he won’t get too raw at the Oscars. He is getting old and all and probably not the hyper black version of Robin Williams minus the Chewbacca body hair.

As far as hoping the politics don’t get involved from “either side of the aisle”, um, it’s ALWAYS a one way street there homie.

Whoops! You are correct on the politics but a guy can dream… I think we’ll get a little bit of both. The pressure will be heavy on his shoulders for sure. But it’s Eddie Murphy. That’s all we will need.
